Recent Masonry Repairs by Balmore Special Contracts

We have just completed masonry repairs to the Park Inn Glasgow, a 91-room hotel which is a grade A listed red sandstone building on the corner of West George Street and Renfield Street. This is a well-known landmark, formerly the Pearl Assurance Building, right in the middle of the city and just 300 metres from the nearest railway station. Therefore it was imperative that the work was carried out to a high standard, with the minimum disruption to people using the pavements around the building.

All work was done utilising a 55-metre access hoist truck mount unit. The work undertaken was:
stone repairs

Sandstone was used for much of the building, a visually attractive material, but one that is not so easy to work with because there are various types of sandstone, with different constituents. It consists mainly of quartz grains, held together by cement, which can be of varying strength, according to the type used.

All this work was carried out safely and efficiently, despite the fact that it involved road closures, traffic management, and the provision of safety tunnels for pedestrians. The work was done on time and within budget. The hotel was closed for refurbishment at the time, and the job took 12 weeks. The work was part of a £12m refurbishment programme.

The hotel is to be opened by Radisson in March 2013, and Balmore Specialist Contracts established in 1984, has become one of the UK’s leading specialists in Stonework Restoration, Steeplejack Works, Lightning Protection, Seamless Roofing Systems and Building Maintenance.
