If you have a slate tile roof in Glasgow then you will have no doubt experienced the drama of walking back home and noticing from a distance that a slate or two has slipped out and now sits at an angle in the gutter.    This can happen with roofs old and new and can be one of two main things.

Firstly – it could be a sign of nail sickness.  This is where the nails that hold the slates in place over time effectively rust away and loose their ability to hold the slate tiles in place.  All it then takes is a strong breeze of a bird landing to cause enough of a disturbance that the slate breaks free and slides down.  Most of the time it will be caught in the gutter which can cause its own problems and other times it can fall off the roof and become a dangerous falling item for anyone walking past at the time.

Secondly – It could just be a loose nail or something similar.  At Balmore Roofing, we always remind our customers that they will happily take their car to be serviced every year but only call out a roofer when something bad has happened.  Keeping your roof in a fit and healthy state can dramatically improve its health.

If your roof is loosing a slate or two a year then this is nothing to be overly concerned about.  It can be kept in check with a regular roof maintenance and health check.  However if you are loosing a significant number of slate tiles every year then you may be suffering from nail rot and nail sicknesses and this needs to be addressed quite quickly.  Because with every slate that your roof looses, you are opening up a new entry way for water to penetrate your home.

If you think your roof is suffering from nail rot and you would like an inspection of your roofs then call our head office today on 0141 944 6100.

We also offer a yearly maintenance check where we can make sure that your roof is in tip top condition.
