Harling Rendering

What is Harling? Harling is a process where we cover stonework in a plastering process. The plastering ‘mix’ that we use consists of small pebbles and fine chips of stone mixed with lime mortar. Harling was originally applied to the stonework of historic buildings to protect them from the worst that the weather in Scotland could throw at them.

As part of our historic building maintenance and repair services, we can provide Harling work for historic buildings that need professional repair work done by an experienced professional. We can ensure that older masonry and stone buildings that have harling rendering continue to look their best and survive for many years to come.

Wet Dash Rendering

Wet Dashing is a traditional pebble dash method of rendering. A pre mix of cement and lime is cast onto a scratch coated wall with the pebble sunk within the mixture. Depending on the cement used, this will resuly ina white or light grey appearance. Used as a decorative finish on the external walls of historic buildings, we can provide a restoration service including recoating your buildings wet dash rendering.

Exterior/External Insulation Boarding

Not to be confused with cladding, external insulation for a home is a less common yet beneficial method of insulating your home. On older properties in Scotland where traditional building methods were used, external insulation boarding walls can help to reduce the temperature difference between the internal environment of your home and the outer walls. This can help to dramatically reduce the the amount of heat loss that your home will suffer from.

There are a variety of types of external wall insulation that can be fitted to homes. Please call us to find out more.

Traditional Lime Render

Lime render was a popular method of building construction on historic and period buildings in Scotland that provided decorative external plastering to many listed buidlings.

Lime rendering is a great method of building restoration that allows the stonework to breath. Lime rendering is both durable and, done properly, can create beautiful finished results to help restore your buildings external walls.

Older historic buildings that had no damp proofing can benefit from lime rendering as the lime finish enables the building to remove moisture through evaporation.

Lime render has been used for hundreds of years and as one of the leading historic building restoration contractors in Scotland, we can provide a complete lime rendering restoration service.

Acrylic and Polymer Rendering

Polymer Renders incorporate silicone water repellents mixed with cement to create a finish that offers a high level of water repellence yet allows water vapour to pass through the render and lets the substrate breathe. Polymer Rendering can come on a variety of colours and can be finished in different textures depending on the building application and requested style.

Acrylic Rendering is a finishing coat for render that is used to provide an attractive finish. It can be applied to new and existing rendered walls.
